Halloween Events in San Diego

San Diego doesn’t wait until October 31 to get spooky. The whole month fills up with haunted trails, ghost tours, pumpkin patches, and a few surprises you probably haven’t tried yet. Some of it’s made for kids, some of it’s designed for adults who still like being scared, and a few hit that rare middle ground. Here’s the breakdown of what’s happening and when, so you can skip the guesswork and head straight to the fun.

HALLOWEEN AT LILIAN’S & THE INN | RANCHO SANTA FE

On October 29, from 6:00 - 10:00 pm, Lilian’s and The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe host an adults only Halloween evening with themed spaces, signature cocktails, and live music by Perry. The Lobby, Bing’s Bar, Café, Library, and Vintage rooms each get their own transformation. Start with dinner at Lilian’s, then explore the property in costume.

There’s extra incentive to dress up: costume prizes include getaways to Napa, Las Vegas, and Newport Beach. Drinks are available for purchase.

FALL FUN + HAUNTED CORN MAZE | CARLSBAD STRAWBERRY COMPANY

The Carlsbad Strawberry Company is North County's go-to from October 2 - October 31 if you like the idea of Julian's fall festivals but want something closer to home. Families come for the pumpkin patch, tractor rides, bounceland, and Jurassic Fright, a Halloween spin on their dinosaur setup that's designed for kids. The atmosphere changes completely on Friday and Saturday nights when the corn maze turns haunted, and that one’s strictly for teens and adults. Tickets are sold separately for each activity, so it's easy to choose how you want to experience it.

TRICK OR TREAT SYMPHONY | JACOBS MUSIC CENTER

On October 31 at 11:00 am, Trick or Treat Symphony brings a Halloween concert to Jacobs Music Center. Conductor Kalena Bovell leads the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in a program that includes Night on Bald Mountain, Hungarian Dance No. 5, and selections from Peer Gynt.

Arrive before the concert for crafts, costumes, and trick or treat activities. The concert is designed for families with children ages 6 to 12

WICKED SPOOKY TEA | FAIRMONT GRAND DEL MAR

For a daytime Halloween outing, Wicked Spooky Tea takes place in Fairmont Grand Del Mar’s Lobby Lounge on Saturdays and Sundays in October, from noon to 3:30 pm. The seasonal afternoon tea includes finger foods and sweets with a Halloween twist, and costumes are encouraged.

SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA | FAIRMONT GRAND DEL MAR

On October 30, starting at 5:00 pm, the Fairmont hosts its Spooktacular Halloween Extravaganza. The event is setup for all ages, with kid-friendly stations like Trick-or-Treat, Witch in Candyland, a Mad Scientist lab, and characters in the garden. Throughout the evening there are seasonal bites, drinks, a live DJ, and a dance performance by Scripps Performing Arts. Costumes are encouraged and there’s a festive energy from start to finish. If you want a Halloween event that’s not just for kids and not just for grown-ups, this one hits both!

QUE BONITO AMOR & MAMBOMANIA | BALBOA PARK

San Diego Ballet’s Que Bonito Amor & Mambomania brings two audience favorites to the San Diego Museum of Art’s James S. Copley Auditorium on October 30 and 31 at 8:00 pm as part of the museum’s first Día de los Muertos celebration. Que Bonito Amor is set to mariachi music, while Mambomania draws inspiration from the mambo records artistic director Javier Velasco’s father loved.

The program honors family and remembrance through dance, celebrating loved ones who have passed.

A HAUNTING IN VENICE GONDOLA CRUISE | CORONADO CAYS

From October 28 through October 31, A Haunting in Venice Gondola Cruise offers nighttime water views with a seasonal twist led by phantom gondoliers. Guests can choose between a private 50-minute ride or a larger shared gondola, depending on the experience you want. Select wines and chocolates are also available for purchase, which adds a fun extra touch to the evening. Spots are limited during Halloween week, so booking early is smart. This one works especially well for couples or small groups looking for something unique.

HOWL-O-SCREAM | SEAWORLD

On select nights from September through October, SeaWorld transforms from a family park to an after-hours haunted attraction. Howl-O-Scream has scare zones, haunted houses, and live entertainment. Along with the mazes and performers, there are cocktails, beer, and spirits poured at six themed bars and five speakeasies scattered throughout the park. This one is designed for adults, with scares that are too intense for kids. The production value is on theme-park scale, with professional performers and detailed mazes that make it easy to stretch into a full night out. Riding roller coasters in the dark while you’re already on edge only adds to the experience. Just note that this is a separately ticketed event.

THE HAUNTED TRAIL | BALBOA PARK

The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park has been a San Diego Halloween tradition since 2000. It features two experiences: the 3,500 square foot eXperiment Maze and a mile long outdoor trail through twisted pines and gnarled oaks. CNN named it one of the country’s top five haunted attractions, and the Travel Channel featured it on “America’s Scariest Halloween Attractions.” It’s not recommended for children under 10. If you scare easily, this isn’t for you.

My tip: get the Scream Pass. You can arrive anytime during operating hours on your selected day, with expedited entry to both the maze and trail.

STUDY HALL: WORLD OF AGAVE & DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS | FAIRMONT GRAND DEL MAR

Photo credit Fairmont Grand Del Mar

On October 27 at 6:00 pm, Study Hall takes place at The Library, Fairmont Grand Del Mar’s intimate speakeasy. This session explores the world of agave and Día de los Muertos, with industry professionals guiding guests through tastings and sharing their knowledge of spirits. Beginners and enthusiasts are both welcome. Just note that this is a ticketed event.

THE WHALEY HOUSE | OLD TOWN

The Whaley House, often called The Most Haunted House in America is a classic Halloween stop. Thomas Whaley built the house in 1857 after coming to California during the Gold Rush. Along with being his family home, it housed San Diego’s first commercial theater, the second county courthouse, and a bilingual general store.

The history gets darker from there. Members of the Whaley family died in the house, and its haunted reputation traces back to public executions that took place on the property before construction. Visitors have reported paranormal encounters ever since.

Book a guided tour of the house and surrounding grounds to hear the history and ghost stories. You might leave with one of your own.

DÍA DE MUERTOS GALA | FAIRMONT GRAND DEL MAR

The season continues into November with the 4th annual Día de Muertos Gala on November 1 at Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The event celebrates Mexican culture, family, and remembrance while honoring Chef José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen. All proceeds benefit Fundación Tijuana Sin Hambre, which provides meals to children, families, seniors, and others experiencing food insecurity in Tijuana.

General admission begins at 6:30 pm at Grand Social, with a VIP cocktail reception at 5:00 pm on Solana Terrace. This is a reception style evening with chef stations, wine, spirits, live entertainment, and cultural traditions. Participating chefs include Javier Plascencia, Roberto Alcocer, Drew Deckman, and Esteban Lluis.

October in San Diego doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some nights are perfect for pumpkin patches or rooftop movies, while others call for ghost stories and haunted trails. For a Halloween night out in San Diego, I put together a plan that pairs a few of these with stops not listed here, all in a single evening.
