Father’s Day in San Diego is a great reason to spend time with Dad and plan something that feels easy, thoughtful, and fun. I put together a list of Father’s Day ideas near Rancho Santa Fe or a short drive away, including outdoor stays, axe throwing, escape rooms, live comedy, local breweries, and brunch. These options give you a few different ways to celebrate, based on the kind of day he would enjoy most.
1. Camping, Glamping, and RVing
For a Father’s Day idea that gets everyone outside, camping, glamping, or RVing can be a great way to spend the weekend together. San Diego has access to beautiful outdoor areas, including Cleveland National Forest, along with plenty of nearby campgrounds and unique stays. Hike, camp out under the stars, gather by the evening fire while enjoying s’mores and laughs with the family. Check out Hipcamp for a comprehensive list of unique outdoor stays.
2. Axe Throwing
Axe throwing is a fun option for the active dads who like activities that get everyone involved. San Diego has several axe throwing spots, including Axe Thro Co, where groups can learn the basics and take turns throughout the session. It's easy to plan around lunch, drinks, or another stop nearby.
3. Escape Room
For dads who enjoy puzzles and problem solving, an escape room is a fun way to spend part of Father’s Day together. San Diego has several options, including Escapology and Great Room Escape, where families can work through clues and complete a themed room as a group. It is a simple way to add an activity to the day before or after brunch, dinner, or drinks.
4. National Comedy Theatre
Share a night of laughter with Dad at National Comedy Theatre is a live improv comedy show in San Diego. The Mainstage Show cast performs every Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm, with a 1 hour and 40 minute show created entirely from audience suggestions. There is also an unrated Friday night performance for ages 16 and up. The show has been running since 1999, with more than 6,500 performances, making it the longest running show in San Diego history. I have been several times, and it is a fun Father’s Day option if you want something easy to pair with dinner.
5. Brewery Visit

San Diego is one of the best cities for a Father’s Day brewery visit. If Dad enjoys craft beer, you can spend the afternoon tasting IPAs, stouts, lagers, and more while keeping the day easy. Take him on a brewery tour to explore the city’s craft beer scene, with stops at breweries like Stone Brewing or local favorites like Eppig Brewing and Harland Brewing Co. Add good food, great company, and a simple toast to Dad, and it becomes a fun way to spend quality time together on Father’s Day.
5. Father's Day Brunch

Father’s Day does not need to be complicated to feel special. A great meal, a fun activity, or a simple day outside can be a great way to spend time with Dad. No matter what you choose, the best part is making time to celebrate him.
