La Jollita is a Mexican coastal seafood restaurant on Prospect Street in La Jolla, led by Alejandro Angulo. His family is behind Grupo Los Arcos, a Mexican hospitality group founded in 1977 in Culiacán, Sinaloa, with nearly 30 restaurants across Mexico. La Jollita is Angulo’s first restaurant north of the border, bringing the seafood background of Los Arcos into La Jolla Village through tacos, tostadas, zarandeados, and coastal Mexican dishes. The name translates to “little jewel,” with the restaurant shaped around Mexican seafood and family history.

The interiors were designed by MM Estudio Interior, led by Marco Martin. The room has a clear 1970s coastal influence, with green framing around the bar with Zarandeados and Taco Gober signage above it, striped booths along the walls, woven chairs in the dining room, patterned tile flooring, and light wood paneling throughout the dining room. The flooring is inspired by maritime signal flags, with La Jollita worked into the design, which is a detail you might miss at first and then notice once you are already seated. The rest of the room keeps building on that coastal direction through vintage postcards, reworked nautical objects, paddles, life rings, framed artwork, and a suspended kayak overhead. Outside, the umbrella shaded patio faces Prospect Street and is dog friendly. Siamak Art Gallery, LIK Fine Art, and National Gallery of Fine Art are all close by, which is perfect if you want to visit a gallery before dinner and drinks.

Before the first dishes arrived, I started with a refreshing Cherry Pop Spritz made with grapefruit and cherry smash, vodka, and grapefruit gin, alongside a complimentary bowl of blue corn tortilla chips, limes, green salsa, and red salsa for the table.

We started with the Rock Shrimp, crispy shrimp tossed in a habanero glaze, followed by the Esquite, Mexican street corn with lime, cotija cheese and chili. These two dishes complimented each other perfectly because they brought in heat, lime, and texture without making the start of the meal feel too heavy.

For the entrees, we had the Zarandeado Fish which was char grilled and marinated over open flame, Coastal style. It arrived with tortillas, so the dish was easily shareable. This was my favorite dish of the meal because it captured the seafood direction of La Jollita in the clearest way. This dish will be at the top of my list when I return.

The tacos came next, starting with the Taco Lorenza, a warm corn tortilla layered with grilled cheese, carne asada, onions, jocoque, and cilantro. We followed with the Taco Gobernador, made with sautéed shrimp machaca with roasted poblano chile, onion & melted cheese. I added the mole, which brought more depth to the taco while still keeping the shrimp, poblano, and cheese at the center.

We also tried the Tuna Tostada, topped with fresh avocado and finished with a touch of chili oil for subtle heat. This one reminded me of Contramar in Mexico City. The tuna tasted fresh, and the avocado and chili oil added to the clean flavor.

We finished with the Tres Leches, served in the traditional style as a soft cake soaked with 3 milks and finished with a light cream topping. It was easy to share and gave the meal a simple, classic ending.

Service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal, and the timing was faster than expected. The dishes arrived soon after we made our selections, which kept dinner moving without making it feel rushed. Parking around Prospect Street can take a few extra minutes, so I would plan to arrive early.

La Jollita brings Mexican coastal seafood to La Jolla in a way that honors both places. The design reflects La Jolla’s coastal setting, while the menu stays rooted in the Sinaloa seafood traditions behind Grupo Los Arcos. It’s a natural fit for Prospect Street, with shareable dishes, detailed interiors, and a dog friendly patio facing the village.
