Leaf Peeping Road Trips

Chasing Fall Colors from Southern California

When the leaves turn from green to a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and golds, there's no better time to hit the road and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of autumn.

As a top luxury realtor in Rancho Santa Fe, I have the daily pleasure of living and working among some of the most beautiful landscapes and luxury properties in the world. Still, when time allows, I love to go and explore the fall colors throughout our region. This age-old tradition has seen renewed interest of late, as a way to escape and enrich our increasingly digital lives. It has a fun new name too: leaf peeping!

Planning a leaf-peeping adventure of your own? Here are a few of my recommendations for your next leaf-peeping road trip out of SoCal, to make the most of nature's magnificent display.

But First: Why Go Leaf Peeping?

There's something magical about the changing of the seasons, and fall may be the most enchanting time of all. In case autumn’s colorful display is not enough to tempt you outside, here are a few more reasons to escape on a leaf-peeping road trip:

  1. Disconnect from the daily grind. Escape the noise of everyday life and reconnect with nature's beauty. In today’s world, it’s a much needed necessity.
  2. Rediscover the simple pleasures. Bombarded with screens and constant stimulation, a leaf-peeping road trip offers you a chance to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life—the crunch of leaves beneath your feet, the crisp autumn air, and the warmth of a cozy sweater.
  3. Explore new destinations. Charming small towns? Majestic national parks? They are all nearby, another one of numerous perks of life in Southern California. The best part of leaf peeping is that it opens the door to discovering so many more wonders along the way.

Leaf peeping invites you to escape from the everyday, not to mention enjoy some fabulous sweater weather after a hot SoCal summer! You’ve got your fall fashion, so the next question is: Where to?

Where to Peep Fall Foliage from Southern California

New England may be famous for its fall foliage, but you don't have to trek across the country to experience the magic of autumn. Many of California's state parks and scenic areas offer stunning displays of fall colors, surprisingly close to home! Here are some of the best leaf-peeping destinations within a day or less of driving distance from Rancho Santa Fe.

1. Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, San Diego County

Located just an hour northeast of San Diego, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is known for its beautiful black oaks, which turn a stunning golden yellow in the fall. The park offers hiking trails, camping, and breathtaking views of the colorful landscape.

2. Julian, California

A short drive from Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, the historic town of Julian, CA is another must-visit for fall color enthusiasts. Stroll down Main Street, sample the famous apple pie, and take in the rich autumn hues of the local oak and maple trees.

3. Palomar Mountain State Park, San Diego County

Situated in the Palomar Mountains, the Palomar Mountain State Park features a picturesque autumn vista of bracken fern in the meadows turning a rich golden brown against the dark green of adjacent forests. The park also offers camping, hiking, and fishing opportunities.

4. Plumas-Eureka State Park, Plumas County

For those willing to venture further north, Plumas-Eureka State Park in the Sierra Nevada mountains offers a stunning autumn landscape with a mix of trees that change colors in the fall and evergreens. The park's hiking trails provide ample opportunity to indulge in the colorful scenery.

5. Yosemite National Park, California

Host to some of the state’s most incredible landscapes and landmarks, Yosemite National Park is a world-renowned destination that's breathtaking any time of year. In the fall, the valley's black oaks turn a golden hue, while the dogwoods display fiery reds. Hike the park's iconic trails to fully appreciate the autumn beauty.

6. June Lake Loop, California

The June Lake Loop, located north of Mammoth Lakes, is a scenic drive that showcases the vibrant fall colors of the Eastern Sierra. The aspen-lined shores of June, Gull, Silver, and Grant Lakes burst with gold and orange hues in late September and early October.

7. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, Shasta County

This Northern California park features an array of fall colors, from the bright yellows of big leaf maples to the reds of California black oaks. Mid-October is typically the best time to visit McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The park also features the stunning 129-foot Burney Falls.

These are just a few of the many incredible leaf-peeping destinations California has to offer. For more information on these and other leaf-peeping destinations in California's state parks, check out the Fall Colors guide from the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Making the Most of Your Leaf-Peeping Road Trip

For a fall road trip is as enjoyable as it is beautiful, keep these tips in mind.

  1. Plan ahead. Consult the 2024 Fall Foliage Prediction Map to time your trip for peak color. Book your hotels in advance, especially if you want nicer accommodations, since rooms can fill up quickly during peak leaf-peeping season.
  2. Pack smart. Bring layers, as fall temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. Don't forget your camera to capture the stunning scenery! Pack plenty of snacks and water to keep everyone happy and hydrated, especially if you'll be driving at high altitudes.
  3. Be a little spontaneous. While having a general itinerary is helpful, allow room for unexpected detours and discoveries. Some of the best moments happen when you least expect them. Leave enough time for moments of randomness and quirky roadside attractions.
  4. Venture beyond the “chains”. Roadside diners, food trucks, and yes, even gas stations, may surprise you with their tasty regional food. Don't just settle for fast food - look out for unique local flavors.
  5. Take care of your car. Before hitting the road, make sure your tires are filled, fluids are topped off, and your car is in good shape to avoid any mishaps. Pack a "car bag" with cleaning supplies, a jack, tools, and a flashlight just in case.
  6. Limit your daily drive time. On longer trips, to fully enjoy the journey and have time for impromptu stops and explorations, plan to drive no more than 4-6 hours each day.
