The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe: A Local’s Guide

I've had the pleasure of calling Rancho Santa Fe home for years, and one of my favorite local spots is The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The luxury resort has been a staple in our community, in one form or another, for more than a century. I’m happy to report that its recent renovation has only added to its allure.

As a Top Luxury Realtor in Rancho Santa Fe, my passion is sharing this community with others. So, for the visitor, the local, and maybe even the prospective homebuyer, here’s what you need to know about The Inn at RSF.

About The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe

As one arrives into the lobby of The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, one is immediately struck by the sense of history and grandeur that pervades this iconic resort. Recently reopened after a multimillion-dollar renovation, The Inn has been meticulously restored to its former glory with a refined, modern twist. I must say, the restoration has undeniably elevated the resort to new heights.

The lobby itself is set in a beautifully restored, original building that dates back to 1924. Originally known as La Morada, the property first changed hands in 1940 and was renamed The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, hosting many celebrities and Hollywood stars over the years. Most recently, the property sold in 2022 to Palm Springs hotelier Steve Hermann who then sold it for $100 million in July 2023 to GEM Realty Capital Inc., a Chicago-based real estate investment firm. This record-breaking sale was the largest hospitality deal in our county and the third largest in California.

The new renovations remain faithful to our history while also incorporating the modern conveniences needed to attract visitors both near and far. The integrity of the grounds and walking paths has been kept intact, while the interior has been revitalized with a curated aesthetic that blends old and new. The result is a warm and inviting space that feels like an escape from the world outside.

Staying at The Inn

Accommodations at The Inn are impressive, with 85 sophisticated options to choose from, including suites, cottages, and stand-alone residences. Each room has been designed to feel like a private retreat—open floor plans, fireplaces, private patios, and luxurious bathrooms with marble sinks and rainfall showers. The color scheme is rich and soothing, with a focus on greens, natural wood tones, beige, and white.

But what truly sets The Inn apart is its staff. From the moment you arrive, you are treated to exceptional service that's both personalized and attentive. The team at The Inn clearly takes pride in connecting with guests, even before they arrive, and I’ve heard nothing but good things from folks who have stayed. It's a level of service that feels reminiscent of a bygone era.

Exploring The Inn's grounds, I'm struck again by the attention to detail that's gone into the resort. The beautifully landscaped gardens, the art deco-style pool and sun deck—every element has been designed to create a sense of luxury and relaxation. And with a range of activities to choose from, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, and tennis, there's something for virtually everyone to enjoy.

The Restaurant: Lillian’s

Lilian's Website | Menu

Lillian's, The Inn's signature restaurant, is a must-visit for any foodie in Rancho Santa Fe. Named after the visionary Lillian Rice—a pioneering female architect who played a key role in shaping the character and architectural style of Rancho Santa Fe in the 1920s and 1930s—the restaurant serves up fresh, sustainable cuisine that's both delicious and visually stunning. From the Mediterranean Yogurt Labneh to the Duck Hash, every dish by Chef Moira Hill shows her passion for highlighting fresh, local ingredients.

I've had the pleasure of dining at Lillian's a number of times, and each experience has been excellent. The atmosphere is approachable but elegant, suitable for both casual and special occasions. It’s a great option to have right here in the community.

The Bar: Bing’s

Bing’s Bar Website | Menu

Bing's Bar is named after the legendary Bing Crosby, who was an early Rancho Santa Fe resident, co-founder of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Racetrack, and today the namesake of RSF’s neighborhood The Crosby.

In fitting crooner-inspired style, Bing’s is a wood-paneled, upscale English pub-style clubhouse and the perfect spot to relax over a drink or two. Enjoying a bountiful selection of California and old-world wines, top spirits, and light bites, you may feel whisked away to simpler times. Bonus: Enjoy live music at Bing’s on Thursdays, starting at 6PM.

Mila Moursi Spa

Also within the property grounds, the Mila Moursi Spa at The Inn is a celebration of wellness, focusing on comprehensive wellness rituals and advanced skincare techniques. Their treatments include everything from classic European facials to rejuvenating LED light therapy, each designed to balance relaxation and the most advanced skincare. Experience total relaxation with a full-body massage. Mila Moursi Spa was recently named by Condé Nast Traveler as one of "the best new spas in the world." Absolutely worth it!

Wellness Classes at the Inn (Locals Welcome!)

The Spa at The Inn is not just for resort guests! Community members are invited to enjoy treatments, and join various classes and events, at a reasonable price.

Yoga and Meditation

I'm a big fan of the Yoga and Meditation classes at The Inn. They're held every Friday and Saturday at 8am, and are perfect for finding your balance and flow. The classes are complimentary for resort guests, and just $20 for locals. Plus, the outdoor patio at Lillian's is a beautiful spot to enjoy a post-class brunch.

Private Yoga with Celebrity Coach

If you're looking for a more personalized yoga experience, I highly recommend booking a private yoga session with celebrity yoga trainer Bobbi Hamilton. She's a world-renowned yogi who will help you deepen your practice and achieve a profound mind-body connection.

Strength and Stretching

The Strength and Stretching class at The Inn is another great option. It's held every Saturday at 9am, and is designed to help you release tension, tone muscles, and find mind-body harmony. Like the yoga classes, it's complimentary for resort guests and $20 for locals.

I love that The Inn offers these classes to both guests and the public. It's a great way to meet new people and feel like you're part of the community. And with the beautiful grounds and luxurious amenities, you'll feel like you're treating yourself to a little something special.

Private Dining and Events

If you have a larger group or gathering, The Inn offers private dining options and venues exclusively for groups of ten or more with a custom selection from Lillian's menu. The Library, full of vintage books and featuring a wood-burning fireplace and glass doors leading to the outdoor courtyard, is my favorite.

Many couples host their weddings at The Inn as well. Venues range from a cozy 16-guest cottage setting to 200-guest ballrooms and manicured 400-guest lawns. I've seen firsthand how The Inn can transform events into something truly magical and breathtaking.
