Olivenhain is one of 5 communities that make up Encinitas, along with Leucadia, Cardiff by the Sea, New Encinitas, and Old Encinitas. The community was founded as a German colony in 1884, and the Olivenhain Meeting Hall was built between 1894 and 1895. It’s a couple of miles inland from Moonlight State Beach along the Encinitas coast, with easy access to Manchester Avenue, Rancho Santa Fe Road, Lone Jack Road, downtown Encinitas, and the I-5.

Lifestyle

Olivenhain has a rural feel that is uncommon this close to the coast. Low density zoning, winding two lane roads, horse trails, citrus and avocado orchards, hiking trails, gardens, and large stretches of undeveloped countryside define the character of the community. Sidewalks are rare here by design.

One distinctive aspect of Olivenhain is its dark skies policy, which limits light pollution through restrictions on streetlights and outdoor lighting on public structures. The landscape and minimal light interference make it one of the better spots in the area for stargazing. Outdoor movie nights are held throughout the summer at the Olivenhain Meeting Hall and Grounds.

Nature & Beaches

Olivenhain has an extensive network of hiking and biking trails accessible from Taegan Lane. The 700 acre San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve is nearby, including the San Elijo Lagoon Trail, a 3 mile route that welcomes dogs. Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve is just down the road. Little Oaks Equestrian Park offers trail access, a riding arena, trailer parking, and picnic tables. Hot air balloons are a regular sight over the hills in the late afternoon and early evening.

Other nearby destinations include Wiro Park on 11th Avenue, Sun Vista Park at the corner of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida La Posta, the San Diego Botanic Garden, Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, and Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. The beaches of Encinitas are a few miles away.

Restaurants & Shopping

Olivenhain is primarily a residential community without much dining in the immediate area. Downtown Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe all have a wide range of options nearby. Local favorites include The Cottage, a well known brunch spot just north of Encinitas Boulevard, and Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe. Farmers markets in Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe run on weekends with organic produce and local vendors.

Schools

Education opportunities in the area are among the best in the state. Olivenhain is served by Encinitas Union School District for elementary school and San Dieguito Union High School District for middle and high school. Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary is the school most commonly associated with the area. Middle school placement varies between Diegueño Middle School and Oak Crest Middle School. La Costa Canyon High School is the boundary high school for students in the Encinitas district, and San Dieguito High School Academy is available through open enrollment. Private school options nearby include The Rhoades School, The Nativity School, Diegueno Country School, and Santa Fe Christian.
