Rancho Santa Fe has earned its reputation among golfers for good reason, with 11 courses sitting within a short drive of each other. The range is remarkable for an area this size. One opened in 1929 and hosted the original Crosby Clambake, the tournament that became the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Another closes with a par 4 played over a stream to a waterfall. One is walked with a forecaddie, one crosses a canyon on two bridges, and one sits on cliffs above the Pacific where you can watch paragliders drift past between shots. Nine are private, two are public, and the designers behind them include Max Behr, Pete Dye, Robert Trent Jones II, Rees Jones, and Tom Fazio. Exclusively available to homeowners within the Covenant, RSF Golf Club opened in 1929 and is often considered the centerpiece of the Rancho Santa Fe community. David McLay Kidd renovated it in 2021, and it has been recognized as one of the top 100 walking courses in America, with architects describing it as a rare blend of challenge and playability. Beyond the golf shop, driving range, and short game area, the Spanish inspired clubhouse is finishing a $9.4 million renovation and reopens this year with a great room built around a central circular bar, a wine lounge, a card room, and an expanded patio. It remains an intimate, close-knit golfing destination, where members often stop for lunch on the patio after a morning round.

The Bridges is a private golf and country club built around a championship course by Robert Trent Jones II, who has called it one of the top five out of the 285 courses his firm has designed worldwide. The routing puts the golf in the low ground and the homes on the ridges, so the course moves through a creek, ravines, and canyon carries, with two stress ribbon bridges crossing at the 10th and 11th. There is a pro shop on site, and the Richard C. Helmstetter Performance Centre has two hitting bays with Full Swing golf simulators, PuttView, and Swing Catalyst, led by PGA professional Matt Kilgariff. The clubhouse reopened in September 2026 after a $14 million renovation, keeping the Tuscan architecture and adding contemporary Mediterranean interiors and century old reclaimed white oak floors in the dining room. Executive Chef Alex Bloom builds his menu around the club's onsite farm, paired with a wine program from Level 2 Sommelier Brian Green.

La Valle Coastal Club sits three miles from Del Mar's beaches with a 27 hole championship course the club calls some of the most walkable golf in San Diego, including a 9 hole Links Course for a shorter, easier paced round. Alongside it are expansive practice facilities and a stocked pro shop. The racquet program runs 22 LED lit courts, 8 for tennis, 12 for pickleball, and 2 for padel, with full-time pros offering private lessons, complimentary clinics, and league play. Verde is the club's wellness center, with reformer Pilates, recovery modalities, spa services, and a full group exercise schedule alongside the resort style pool and jacuzzi. Guesthouse, Hotel at La Valle offers 77 newly renovated rooms and suites, and hotel guests get access to the members-only amenities.

Fairbanks Ranch Country Club is a longtime RSF favorite, now part of the Bay Club, with 27 walkable holes across three named nines. The Valley plays below the hills and rewards accurate tee shots, the Lakes is built around water, and the Ocean is the shortest and straightest of the three, though not the easiest. Any two combine into a full round, so the course rarely plays the same way twice. Membership includes the Troon Privé Privileges Program, which opens access to more than 100 private clubs and 150 resort courses beyond Fairbanks Ranch. Dining, tennis, pickleball, a resort style pool, group exercise, and kids camps round out the club.

The Santaluz Club is built around the Rees Jones designed, 250 acre championship course, with manicured fairways and bent grass greens running through native Southern California grasslands and views from Black Mountain to the Del Mar coastline. The 35,000 square foot clubhouse adds another 5,000 square feet of outdoor patio, built in authentic California ranch style from the 1920s and 1930s. Inside are formal and casual dining, an award winning golf shop, and generous men's and ladies' lounges with steam rooms, sauna, and a whirlpool. The Spa at Santaluz has gardens, water features, and indoor and outdoor treatment rooms. Below the clubhouse, the 19,000 square foot Hacienda sits along an 11 acre Village Green with a resort style pool, six lighted tennis courts, an indoor basketball court, a fitness center, a bistro with firepit, and Camp Santaluz for children ages 4 to 12.

The Crosby Club's takes its name from Bing Crosby, who bought a home in Rancho Santa Fe in 1934. The 18 hole championship course opened in 2001, designed by Fred Couples with Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt of Schmidt-Curley, and it is known for its complex layout, elevation changes, and the water features running through the San Dieguito River Valley. Troon manages the club, and the practice facilities include a driving range, chipping area, and putting green. Beyond golf there is a fitness center, three tennis courts, four pickleball courts, kids camps, and several dining options. A 25 yard pool is kept at 81 degrees year round, and a nearly two mile walking and biking trail runs along the river.

Del Mar Country Club | Rancho Santa Fe
Del Mar Country Club sits in a secluded valley of Rancho Santa Fe, with a championship course designed by Joseph Lee that opened in 1991. The routing winds around streams, lakes, and cascading waterfalls, with five tee settings and a no tee time policy, so members play when they arrive rather than booking ahead. The course is dog friendly, and Ranch & Coast named it Best Private Course. Five tennis courts match the surface and color used at the US Open and are lit for night play, alongside four pickleball courts, a Junior Olympic pool, a fitness center, and a kids playground. Dining runs through the Butterscotch Lounge and the Safari Club inside the 55,000 square foot clubhouse, where Chef Ryan Star works largely from the club's own organic garden.

Lomas Santa Fe Executive Golf Course | Solana Beach
Designed by William Bell in 1973, the Lomas Santa Fe Executive Golf Course is one of only two public courses in this guide, and the closest one to Rancho Santa Fe. Anyone can book a tee time, no membership or sponsor required, which is rare in an area where nearly every course sits behind a gate. At 2,431 yards it moves quickly, and the course is built into hills, so most tee shots play uphill or downhill, with tree lined fairways and greens golfers say rival those at full length courses. Golf Range Magazine has named it a top short course two years running, it hosts the Callaway Junior Worlds, and the instruction program covers juniors, beginners, and experienced players with private and group lessons, clinics, and swing analysis. Weekly play groups on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays give it a regular, familiar crowd. There is a putting area and a fully stocked pro shop, plus a patio restaurant with local craft beers on tap that the Union Tribune once called a great spot for a summer evening.

The Farms Golf Club | Rancho Santa Fe
Founded in 1984, The Farms Golf Club, turned a small lake and 240 acres into a championship course with Tommy Jacobs and Pete, Perry, and Alice Dye, and it remains dedicated exclusively to golf, with no pool and no tennis courts. The Dye layout is known for being genuinely demanding, and Golf Digest has named it one of the top 50 clubs in the country with the best players, with a membership that runs from PGA professionals and collegiate athletes to low index amateurs. It has hosted the Trans-Mississippi Four-Ball Championship, USGA Amateur Qualifiers, SCGA Championships, and NCAA Regionals. Tom Lehman, the only golfer named Player of the Year on all three PGA Tours, helped lead the 2000 redesign, and a recent renovation by Tim Liddy, who began his career working alongside Pete Dye, restored the bunkering and fairways. Executive Chef Diane Allen-Baines has run the kitchen for more than twenty years, serving breakfast and lunch six days a week with four daily specials and everything from stocks to desserts made in house.

Torrey Pines Golf Course | La Jolla

It might not be the closest to Rancho Santa Fe, but Torrey Pines Golf Course is worth the drive, and golfers fly in from around the world to play it. The North and South courses run along cliffs roughly 300 feet above the Pacific in La Jolla, with stunning ocean views from nearly every hole, bordered by the reserve that protects the Torrey pine, the rarest pine in North America. Paragliders launch from the gliderport just up the bluff and drift past while you play, and from December through April you can watch gray whales moving down the coast between shots. Play runs from dawn until dusk, and a twilight round that finishes with the sun going down over the water is the reason people book months ahead. Built in 1957 and owned by the city of San Diego, it is fully public, so anyone can book a tee time on the same South Course where Tiger Woods won the 2008 US Open in a 91 hole playoff, and where the 2021 US Open was played. The PGA Tour has come here every January since 1968, and beginning in 2027 that event becomes The Sentry, running January 25 to 30, when both courses close to public play. San Diego residents can buy a resident card for reduced rates, and lunch is easy at The Lodge at Torrey Pines next door, a AAA Five Diamond Craftsman resort with two restaurants. A.R. Valentien is the fine dining room, with a terrace over the 18th hole, a menu that changes with what comes from local farms and boats, and an all California wine list. The Grill at Torrey Pines is the casual option, with wood fired dishes, local craft beers, and a patio built around fire pits.

Located at Fairmont Grand Del Mar, The Grand Golf Club is San Diego's only Tom Fazio design, routed through Los Peñasquitos Canyon with dramatic elevation changes and a closing par 4 that plays over a stream to a waterfall finish. The club keeps a traditional forecaddie program, rare these days, with caddies who read the course, measure distances, and track errant shots. Practice runs across nearly seven acres, including a 50,000 square foot driving range the Golf Range Association has named a top 50 private facility twelve years running. The 50,000 square foot clubhouse sits just beyond the 18th, with the Clubhouse Grill overlooking the green. The resort is a AAA Five Diamond property with a Forbes Five Star spa, and there are six places to eat, including Addison by William Bradley, the first restaurant in Southern California to earn three Michelin stars. The others are Amaya for terrace dining, Cent'anni Café, the Lobby Lounge, Grand Social seasonally, and the Clubhouse Grill. Resort guests can book tee times, children 12 and under play free with an adult, and members have reciprocal access through Troon Privé.
