Dog Friendly Beaches and Parks Near Rancho Santa Fe
Rancho Santa Fe residents have several dog friendly beaches and off leash parks within a short drive. The rules vary by location, section of beach, season, and time of day. Some beaches allow off leash play, others require a leash, and several nearby beaches do not allow dogs on the sand. This guide covers beach access, parking, facilities, dog rules, distance from Rancho Santa Fe Village, and what to know before leaving home.
Del Mar Beaches
Del Mar North Beach
Del Mar North Beach, commonly called Dog Beach, is the main off leash beach near Rancho Santa Fe. Dogs are welcome throughout the year, but the off leash schedule changes during summer. It's best for off leash exercise, socializing with other dogs, early morning visits and beach walks.
Beach Access. The main entrance is near 29th Street.
Parking. Street parking is available along 29th Street and Camino Del Mar. Read the posted signs before leaving your vehicle.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Not available directly at Dog Beach.
Off-season rules. From the day after Labor Day - June 15, dogs may be off-leash but must be under voice control during the off-season.
Summer rules. From June 16 - Labor Day, dogs may be off leash from dawn to 8:00 AM. Dogs must remain leashed during the rest of the day.
Leash rules. Leashes may not exceed six feet. Dogs must wear a current license, and owners must clean up after them.
Water & beach conditions. This is an active open ocean beach shared by dogs, walkers, volleyball players, and surfers.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 8 to 10 miles and 15 to 25 minutes.
Del Mar City Beach
Dog access at Del Mar City Beach depends on the section and season. The main beach near Powerhouse Park has more restrictions, while South Beach allows leashed dogs year round. This beach is best for leashed shoreline walks, visiting Del Mar Village afterward, and convenient parking.
Beach Access. Concrete walkways lead from Powerhouse Park to the sand.
Parking. Metered parking and street spaces are available near Coast Boulevard.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Available at Powerhouse Park.
Off-season rules. From the day after Labor Day - June 15, dogs must remain leashed between Powerhouse Park and 29th Street. Dogs may be off leash between 25th and 29th streets from dawn until 8:00 AM.
Summer rules. From June 16 through Labor Day, dogs are not allowed between Powerhouse Park and 29th Street.
South Beach Leash rules. Dogs must remain leashed year round between 6th Street and Powerhouse Park.
Powerhouse Park Leash rules. Leashed dogs are permitted on the walkways and sidewalks. Dogs are not allowed in the children’s playground or the adjacent grass area south of the beach path.
Water & beach conditions. This is an active open ocean beach shared by dogs, walkers, volleyball players, and surfers.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 8 to 10 miles and 15 to 25 minutes.
Solana Beach
Tide Beach Park
Tide Beach Park is best for leashed walks, tide pool visits, and dogs (and owners) that prefer a quieter beach. Dogs are allowed only on the section north of the beach stairs toward Cardiff.
Beach Access. A staircase leads down from the bluff at Solana Vista Drive and Pacific Avenue.
Parking. Free street parking is available nearby but is limited.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Outdoor showers are available. Public restrooms are not available.
Dog rules. Leashed dogs are allowed north of the Tide Beach stairs toward Cardiff. Dogs are not permitted south of the stairs. Leashes may not exceed six feet.
Water & beach conditions. Higher tides can cover much of the sand and make walking between sections difficult. Check the tide before visiting.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 7 to 8 miles and 12 to 18 minutes.
Cardiff by the Sea
Cardiff State Beach
Cardiff State Beach offers direct access to a wide sandy shoreline and is a good option for a more relaxed beach walk with your dog, but this is not an off leash beach. Dogs are allowed in specific areas and must stay leashed at all times.
Beach Access. Direct access is available from the Cardiff Reef and Seaside parking areas.
Parking. Paid parking lots.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Available.
Dog rules. Dogs are permitted at Cardiff Reef and Seaside south of Lifeguard Tower 16. Dogs must remain on a leash no longer than six feet and under their owner’s control.
Water & beach conditions. Cardiff is popular with swimmers and surfers and can become busy when surf conditions are good.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 8 to 10 miles and 15 to 20 minutes.
La Jolla Beaches
La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores is a beautiful place for a beach walk, especially since its a wide sandy beach. It is not an off leash beach, but leashed dogs are allowed during specific times of the day depending on the season.
Beach Access. Direct access is available from Kellogg Park.
Parking. A large public lot and nearby street parking are available.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Available.
April 1 through October 31. Leashed dogs are allowed before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM.
November 1 through March 31. Leashed dogs are allowed before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM.
Adjacent park rules. The same restricted hours apply to the beach, boardwalk, and adjacent parks.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 17 to 19 miles and 25 to 35 minutes.
La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove is one of the most recognizable coastal areas in San Diego, but dog access is limited to approved hours and dogs must stay leashed. It is a better fit for a coastal walk than a full beach day with your dog.
Beach Access. Stairways lead from Coast Boulevard and the park above to the beach.
Parking. Street parking and public garages are available in central La Jolla.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Available near the Cove.
April 1 through October 31. Leashed dogs are allowed before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM.
November 1 through March 31. Leashed dogs are allowed before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM.
Wildlife. Keep dogs away from sea lions, seals, tide pools, and posted closure areas.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 19 to 21 miles and 30 to 40 minutes.
Windansea Beach
Windansea Beach is known for its sandstone coastline, surf, and limited sandy areas. Dogs are allowed during designated hours but must remain leashed.
Beach Access. Reaching the sand requires walking across uneven sandstone and natural pathways. There is no paved ramp.
Parking. Limited street parking is available along Neptune Place and throughout the surrounding neighborhood.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Not available.
April 1 through October 31. Leashed dogs are allowed before 9:00 AM and after 6:00 PM.
November 1 through March 31. Leashed dogs are allowed before 9:00 AM and after 4:00 PM.
Water & beach conditions. Windansea can have powerful surf, uneven rocks, and a strong shore break.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 18 to 20 miles and 28 to 38 minutes.
San Elijo State Beach Campground
San Elijo State Beach is often confused with a dog-friendly beach, but the rules are very specific. Dogs are allowed in the campground area only and are not permitted on the beach.
Campground access. The campground is located above the beach along South Coast Highway 101.
Parking. Parking is available for registered campers and paid day use visitors.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Available within the campground.
Dog rules. Dogs must remain on a leash no longer than six feet and under physical control. Dogs are not allowed on the beach.
Water & beach conditions. Cardiff is popular with swimmers and surfers and can become busy when surf conditions are good.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 9 to 11 miles and 18 to 24 minutes.
South Carlsbad State Beach Campground
South Carlsbad State Beach follows a similar rule to San Elijo. Dogs are allowed in the campground area only, not on the beach below the campground.
Campground access. The entrance is located along Carlsbad Boulevard.
Parking. Paid day use and campground parking are available.
Public restrooms & outdoor showers. Available within the park.
Dog rules. Dogs are allowed only within the campground and must remain leashed. Dogs are not permitted on the beach.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 16 to 19 miles and 28 to 38 minutes.
Maggie Houlihan Memorial Dog Park
Maggie Houlihan Memorial Dog Park is located within Encinitas Community Park. The two acre dog park has separate areas for small dogs, shy or first time dogs, and a larger lawn open to all dogs.
Location. 425 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas.
Parking and restrooms. A public parking lot and restrooms are available at Encinitas Community Park.
Dog park setup. Separate areas are available for small dogs and timid or first time dogs, with a larger lawn open to all.
Hours. Open daily from 8:00 AM to sunset.
Maintenance closure. Closed Thursdays from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Temporary rain and maintenance closures may also occur.
Dog rules. Dogs must remain leashed while walking to and from the designated dog park.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 9 miles and 18 to 22 minutes.
Torrey Highlands Park
Torrey Highlands Park has a designated off leash area that is closer to Rancho Santa Fe than many central San Diego dog parks.
Location. Lansdale Drive off Del Mar Heights Road.
Dog park setup. One acre turfed and mulched off leash area.
Hours. Dawn to dusk.
Dog rules. Dogs must remain leashed until they are inside the posted off leash boundary.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 10 miles and 18 to 25 minutes.
Rancho Bernardo Park
Rancho Bernardo Park includes a leash free dog area next to Rancho Bernardo Community Park. It is a larger option and can be helpful for residents on the east side of Rancho Santa Fe.
Location. 18448 West Bernardo Drive.
Parking. Additional parking is available near the dog park.
Dog park setup. Approximately 2.66 acres of designated off leash space.
Hours. Dawn to dusk.
Dog rules. Dogs must remain leashed until they are inside the posted off leash boundary.
From Rancho Santa Fe Village: Approximately 13 miles and 20 to 25 minutes.
Raquel’s Tips for Visiting Dog Friendly Beaches
Bring water, waste bags, and a towel for your dog
Keep a leash with you even at off leash beaches because rules can change by area
Avoid protected habitats, tide pools, and wildlife areas
Make sure your dog has identification on their collar
Go early when the sand is cooler, parking is easier, and the beach is less crowded
Watch the posted signs because they are the rules that matter once you are there
Dog rules along the coast can be specific, and some beaches that seem dog friendly are not open to dogs on the sand. For me, Del Mar North Beach is usually the first choice with my dogs. It gives them room to run and makes an easy family outing close to Rancho Santa Fe. Don't forget to check the rules before you go because beach dog policies change by season and time of day.
